Collecting and Trading Baseball Pins

Along with virtually every sport in the world baseball has its share of collectors. Fans of the game who collect memorabilia. The type of thing they collect varies widely, from autographed baseballs to ticket stubs, you name it and there's probably someone somewhere who collects it and has a fine collection which they display with pride.
One item which is widely collected by baseball fans is the pin, once these pins were traded by coaches and players, nowadays it seems every little league team can have their own custom pin produced for them at very low cost. That means there's a whole world of baseball pins to trade and collect.
Theses pins come in a bewildering variety of styles, with an equally bewildering range of descriptive terms. Danglers, sliders, bobble heads, spinners, blinkies. It can certainly be confusing if you're not a pin collector or trader.
Danglers are basically a pin with a smaller pin attached to it with jump rings so the smaller pin literally "dangles" beneath the larger pin. Sliders are created by forming the larger pin with a hole or slot cut out of it and the smaller pin is fixed through the slot so it does in fact slide across the front of the larger pin.
Bobble head pins are once again a two part pin. The larger pin is often designed as the body of a baseball player and the smaller part of the pin is designed as the head of the player and attached to the larger pin with a spring so that it "bobbles". Spinners are made by attaching a small pin through a hole in the larger pin so that the smaller one is free to spin around. Blinkies are just what the name suggests, they have a built in light which flashes or "blinks". The light is a small LED which is powered by a small battery fixed in the back of the pin along with an on/off switch. The flashing LED is often fixed in place of an eye in the character depicted on the pin, or it may be used to show the location of the team's home town on a map.
Baseball lapel pins can be finished with different sort of colours such as glitter which catches the light attractively and may be used just to highlight the name of the team. Translucent colours allow the shiny polished metal of the pin to show through and reflect the light. You can even choose to have some fluorescent or "glow in the dark" color on your pin.
Baseball trading pins are an attractive very affordable collector's item, you can even buy special collectors bags to store and protect you pins. These are real handy if you travel to games or collectors fairs to trade pins.

Christian Lapel Pins: A Silent Way to Demonstrate Faith

Custom lapel pins are becoming more and more popular among men and women of faith as a means to demonstrate their religion to others in a positive, understated way. Many people have discovered such lapel pins are an excellent way to witness to others they meet every day.

Many Christian symbols are suitable for Christians lapel pins. The most common is, of course, the cross, the ultimate symbol of faith for the devout Christian. But other symbols, including fish, praying hands, angels and more also make excellent testaments to the wearer's abiding faith. Holiday pins such as Christmas trees, Stars of Bethlehem and special Easter crosses also are popular. A reputable custom lapel pin supplier can help create a custom pin that best represents the wearer's devotion to God.

Christian lapel pins can be pinned on clothing, caps, backpacks, or many other items. Some people choose to collect lapel pins as a hobby and Christian pins are a respected segment of the hobby.

Churches often like to use lapel pins to showcase their congregation members. The pins can demonstrate membership in the church or in specialized subgroups such as the choir, the building committee or even specific small groups. The talented graphic artists of a good pin supplier can help produce a custom design that will be perfect for any church, no matter how large or small.

Many companies have designed custom lapel pins of all kinds for other organizations including youth sports teams, civic groups and fraternal organizations, so they will have plenty of experience in pin design. They will be happy to help any church create Christian lapel pins for identification, special event or church fundraising programs.

Christian lapel pins can be manufactured in cloisonne, silk screened, soft enamel, die struck or photo etched styles. Each style has its pros and cons for particular usages.

Cloisonne pins are the highest quality available. These fine jewelry-quality pins are die-struck, then filled with a glass-like mixture of hard enamel and individually fired at high temperatures to ensure the longest durability. Because the manufacturing process is so complex, cloisonne lapel pins are the most expensive custom lapel pin type.

Very similar visually to the cloisonne pins, soft enamel lapel pins are more affordable, because colors are made from soft enamel and fired at a lower temperature. These are the most popular style for sports trading pins

Die-struck lapel pins have no added color. The pins are stamped from a die, and feature recessed areas which have a grainy appearance, and raised areas polished to a high shine. This pin style is common for U.S. military pins and offers a classic, elegant look well suited to Christian lapel pins.

Photo etched lapel pins are the most economical lapel pin style. Because they are made of thinner metal, they are not as durable as other types.

No matter what style of Christian lapel pin you want, a reputable custom lapel pin provider can guide you to the right choice for your church or individual need.

Epoxy vs No Epoxy – Custom Lapel Pins

We receive the question very often, “Should we use an epoxy coating?”

The answer is not always easy. I am a firm believer that a custom lapel pin is all about personal preference. The epoxy coating is an option but is not always needed.

Let's talk about the different styles of lapel pins.
The photodome pin must have an epoxy coating.

Epola pins or Imitation Hard Enamel pins are not recommended to have an epoxy coating, however I have seen times where epoxy was applied.

Soft enamel lapel pins is usually where the question begins.
One has to remember, epoxy s used as a protective covering. Oftentimes when lapel pins are going to be worn and exposed to being damaged (such as on a uniform), epoxy is a good idea. Remember that some details will be lost when the epoxy coating is placed on the lapel pin, because of reflections and depth perceptions.

The Difference Between 3D Lapel Pins And Die Struck Lapel Pins

We are often asked to explain the difference between a 3d design lapel pin and a die struck lapel pin.
The difference is huge, however certain designs do not require a 3d lapel pin design.  The answer is, it really depends on the design.
I will show some examples of the differences.  They always say that a picture is worth a thousand words and I believe that it hold true when trying to demonstrate the difference between the 3d design and die struck lapel pin designs also known as soft enamel lapel pins.

Understanding a Die Struck Lapel Pin Design

Die Struck Lapel Pin Example
Let’s start with a normal die struck or soft enamel pin.   A die struck or soft enamel pin has raised and lowered metal.  This example shows an antique gold lapel pin.  The reason that the antique process is awesome is that the fact that the recessed or lowered metal areas are usually darker, and then create a beautiful contrast with the raised metal portions of the lapel pin, so it really makes the design pop!  On a normal die struck or soft enamel lapel pin, you will notice that you have two options, raised or recessed metal.  This design is perfect for this type of lapel pin process.
The arrows demonstrate where the raised and the lowered portions are on the lapel pin.

Understanding 3d Lapel Pin Designs

3D Lapel Pin Example
The pin on the right is a great example of a 3d lapel pin design.  You will notice that the lion really looks great in the 3d design.  The base lapel pin color is antique gold, which gives lighter and darker shadows as the metal is raised and lowered.  You will notice that in the lowered metal areas, the pin darkens up quite a bit.
What you should notice is that the body of the lion is not just simply raised and lowered metal.  The raised portion of metal on the lion curves and in certain areas, gradually raises up and then gradually lowered again.  It is really the curvatures that separate the two styles.
If you now compare the two styles, you will the gradual and rounded raised metal portions on the 3d lapel pin design vs the die struck pin, where the raised metal is all the same height.  Also the raised metal elements of the die struck lapel pin design are almost like little walls that just go straight up, where the 3d design really curves up.

So let’s look at an examples of what you would see (magnified) on a side profile of a 3d lapel pin vs a die struck lapel pin.
